Overusing antibiotics in food production has created antibiotic resistant bacteria. So the Canadian government has changed legislation to reduce antibiotic use for infection prevention and growth enhancement in animals.
At the same time, consumers are increasing the demand for antibiotic-free livestock, which is creating a competitive advantage for some suppliers, allowing them to charge a premium price.
To help farmers meet the need and the demand for a healthier food chain that is cost-effective, Cytophage, with funding from the Canada and Manitoba governments through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, is now working to develop and validate a Cytophage cocktail containing natural, modified and/or synthetic swine bacteriophage that is effective against the most common bacterial infections in swine, starting with Escherichia coli and Streptococcus suis. Time and funding permitting, the scope of research will expand to include Salmonella spp. and Clostridium spp.
As with other Cytophage bacteriophages, those developed for use in swine will be a highly effective, environmentally safe, and cost competitive alternative to antibiotics that can be added to the herd health strategies of swine farms.
As a part of this ongoing research, we need swine farm samples to determine the bacterial pathogen presence on Manitoba farms. Samples will also be used to test bacteriophage effectiveness.

Replacing antibiotics with Cytophage’s tailor-made swine bacteriophage for infection prevention is key to the sustainability and growth of Canada’s swine industry. Farmers will be able to meet regulatory requirements, and meet the demand for antibiotic-free swine to remain globally competitive.

Bacteriophage therapy has unlimited uses and is effective in eradicating bacterial disease and infection in three key areas.
In food safety, our phages help prevent disease and the spread of disease, without introducing antibiotics into the food chain or the environment.
Cytophage is developing bacteriophages that will reduce and ultimately replace the use of antibiotics for illness prevention and growth enhancement in livestock, starting with poultry.
In human health, phages can address a full range of bacterial illnesses and conditions, from treating acne and eczema, alleviating internal bacterial infections such as pneumonia, preventing wound infections and battling outbreaks such as cholera or diphtheria.
Phages can also be used for the decontamination of hospital surfaces and counters, tools and instruments, beds and curtains, and anywhere else bacterial contamination is a concern.
Bacteriophages are organisms that infect and kill bacterial cells. These natural killers of bacteria can overcome all of the cellular or organism-level defences.
