Antibiotics are valuable tools for reducing human and animal disease and suffering due to bacterial infections. But as the world continues to overuse antibiotics, there are significant repercussions, such as the emergence of antimicrobial resistant bacteria, nicknamed super bugs — those nearly impossible to treat infections that no one antibiotic or combination of antibiotics can cure.  The World Health Organization warns that by 2050, there will be more deaths as a result of our inability to cure superbugs than any other disease.

It’s imperative that we reduce the use of antibiotics in humans and animals immediately. Governments are requiring it, consumers are demanding it, and the world desperately needs it.

Nature has provided a solution to the problem — bacteriophages — and Cytophage has harnessed bacteriophages in a new way to improve human health, animal health and food safety.

Bacteriophages are viruses that kill bacteria and they are everywhere in nature. They work by attaching to the targeted bacteria, inserting their genetic information, replicating themselves, destroying their host then moving on to kill more bacteria. But finding bacteriophage in nature to deal with a specific bacterium is challenging — like finding a needle in a haystack.

At Cytophage, we’ve made an incredible scientific advancement. We’ve created a template technology that can generate any type of bacteriophage in the lab, replacing that ‘search-in-nature’ process and accelerating the development and application of bacteriophages to prevent or treat infections. This would serve as a complement to antibiotics and help tackle the global problem of antibiotic resistance.

Our vision for Cytophage is that every hospital, every veterinarian and every agricultural facility will have a supply of Cytophage products to manage any incumbent or emergent bacterial infection or contamination.

Human Health

In human health, phages can address a full range of bacterial illnesses and conditions, from treating acne and eczema, alleviating internal bacterial infections such as pneumonia, preventing wound infections and battling outbreaks such as cholera or diphtheria.

Phages can also be used for the decontamination of hospital surfaces and counters, tools and instruments, beds and curtains, and anywhere else bacterial contamination is a concern.
